When he got to Wilson & Wilson, he found Sara wrapping a book for a customer. She greeted him with a nod and he went through the door that led to the publishing house, where his boss, Athanasius Vryzas, was sunk deep in the study of a few sheets of paper.

They greeted each other formally, and Vryzas said he should go upstairs straight away to see Mr. Wilson.

“Leyda has been down to ask for you. You are to go up to see Mr. Wilson without delay.”

Leyda Zabat’s smile calmed Fernando. It took the edge off the grave expression on the face of Benjamin Wilson, who received him straight away.

“Hafid came to see me as soon as he had left you at Madame Kokkalis’ house.”

“I wasn’t well; I fell sick at Saint Bishoy. I think it was the goat’s milk.”

“So you haven’t been able to bring me Domenico Lombardi,” Wilson complained.

“Ismail, Hafid’s uncle, swears that he’s dead, as dead as his own son Basim.”

“And now I have to give the bad news to Domenico’s father … well …. These things happen, but Wilson & Wilson doesn’t normally give bad news. We are usually successful, which is why so many people trust us.”

“You knew that it was unlikely that we would bring Lombardi back alive, or that we ourselves would make it back unscathed.”

“You talk too bluntly, too impulsively … I’m not blaming you for anything. There was a chance of success, and I like to tempt fate.”

“Well, we failed, but we are still alive.”

“I’m glad.”

“I can’t believe it. You don’t care. Hafid and I were nothing more than a couple of pawns, and if we’d died then you wouldn’t have cared too much.”

Benjamin Wilson laughed freely. He appreciated Fernando’s arrogance. He thought that the Spaniard was very much like himself, but his grandfather had taught him to keep his emotions in check: otherwise, he wouldn’t have let him run the business.

“You have some books to work on. I promised Marvin that we’d bring his publication date forward. The book has to be in all the bookshops in New York by March, and I hope that it will be released in London as well, in spite of the war. As for Omar Basir’s book, that needs to be done fast as well.”

“I’ll do my job. And now that you mention Marvin … do you know if they made it to France?”

“Don’t worry. Your friend Eulogio is fine.”
